Tinitus

If you are worried that perhaps you are just making up the ringing noise that you hear even though there is no outside source, then you should know that the noise is real, and you are definitely not going crazy. The unwanted sound is medically termed as tinitus, and millions of people experience it. To be more specific, around 66 million people, in the United States alone, have been affected by it in one way or another.

Is it life-threatening? No, it isn’t because it is not a disease or infection of sorts – it is merely a symptom of an underlying medical condition. But, it can have serious implications, and if it is not dealt with properly, it can have severe effects.

What are these implications that we are talking about?

As mentioned, tinitus is a symptom. Its presence can mean that you are suffering from an unhealthy condition. It could be that you are suffering from a cochlear damage due to noise, which is the most common cause of ear ringing. You may also either be suffering from stress, sinus problems or allergies, Meniere’s Disease, age-associated loss of hearing, head and neck injuries, thyroid disorder, or vitamin B12 deficiency. There are more other known causes, though.

If you experience ringing in the ears, go visit your physician as soon as you can. He or she can run some tests to determine which medical condition has caused it. Knowing the root cause of the unwanted sound is also helpful in finding the appropriate treatment as it is generally treated according to its cause. If your doctor tells you to come back in a week or so for the results, do not get stressed or too anxious as it will only trigger or aggravate the ringing in your ears.

If you ask your doctor what you can do to cure it, his or her most probable answer is that you would just have to learn to deal and live it. There is no cure for tinnitus because, as mentioned, it is not a medical condition in itself.

You may make use of remedies like maskers and stress management programs like counseling to deal with the effects of tinnitus. Alternative treatments such as acupressure, acupuncture, relaxation, meditation, and reflexology can also be helpful.

Although there is no cure for the condition, there are actually remedies that are focused on treating its root cause and not just its symptoms, which is how ear ringing should be treated. These are in the form of homeopathic tinnitus remedies, which are products of alternative medicine. You can actually use these homeopathic remedies together with other remedies mentioned above to reduce the level of the unwanted sound to the extent that it will no longer be a factor in your life. And, this is much like having cured of tinitus.
